Discover Phulchowki: A Perfect Day Hike from Kathmandu : Part 1

A few days ago, my friends and I set out on a fun hike to Phulchowki, a popular hill station near Kathmandu. Our group of six was excited to escape the city and enjoy the outdoors. We decided to ride bikes, which made the trip even more exciting.

The Journey Begins: From Godawari to Phulchowki

We started our adventure from Godawari, heading southeast. After a short drive, we followed several turns and the Godawari-Phulchoki Road until we reached the parking area at the base of Phulchowki. The drive was scenic, giving us a beautiful view of the lush surroundings.

Parking and Preparations

Once we arrived, we parked our bikes and bought entry tickets for Rs. 10 each. We also picked up some snacks—instant noodles, Kukure (a popular snack), and water bottles. Phulchowki has a unique rule: you need to deposit Rs. 100 for any plastic waste you bring. If you return with your waste, you get your deposit back, which helps keep the area clean.

The Hike: Where Wild Things Are

We started our hike on the main road but soon ventured into the dense, green forest of Phulchowki. This area is rich in wildlife and features steep slopes, rocky cliffs, and thick undergrowth. The forest, covered in mist and filled with oak and rhododendron trees, is home to various interesting animals.

We took breaks to enjoy our snacks, drink water, and take photos. The forest is home to creatures like the Barking Deer and the Yellow-throated Marten, which are often heard before they are seen. Despite the challenging terrain and some muddy spots, the forest’s beauty made the hike enjoyable.

Reaching the Summit

After about three hours of hiking, we reached the top of Phulchowki. The view was amazing, and we saw the Phulchowki temple, a small but important shrine at the summit. There was also an army camp nearby, which made the area feel safe.

The weather at the top was smoky, and it started to rain just as we arrived. We took shelter near the temple, enjoyed the rain, and had some noodles, which were a bit pricey at Rs. 100 per plate but very satisfying after the long hike.

Part 2: The Descent and Wildlife Encounters

As the rain slowed, we began our descent. It took us about two to three hours to get back down, and the muddy paths made it a bit slippery. Along the way, we met other hikers and shared some laughs, enjoying the company of fellow adventurers.

Phulchowki’s forest is great for wildlife spotting, with animals like the Orange-bellied Squirrel and the elusive Himalayan Black Bear. While the steep and rocky terrain can make it hard to spot wildlife, the forest’s rich diversity adds to its charm. It’s home to many mammals, reptiles, and birds, making it a paradise for nature lovers.

When we finally got back to the parking area, we returned our plastic waste and got our Rs. 100 deposit back. We then rode our bikes back to Koteshwor, feeling proud and happy with our day of exploration.

Why You Should Visit Phulchowki

If you want a refreshing outdoor experience near Kathmandu, Phulchowki is a great choice. Its rich wildlife, beautiful scenery, and escape from the city make it perfect for nature enthusiasts. Just remember to pack snacks, bring water, and take your waste with you to help keep the environment clean.

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just enjoy nature, Phulchowki offers a memorable adventure with stunning views and a chance to connect with the wilderness.
